:

HONGKONG. 23rd. August, 1916.

Referring to the correspondence ending with my Confidential Despatch of April 22nd., 1914, I have the honour again to ask that the question of reserving the Peak School for the children of parents of European race may be reconsidered.

This school is now well established, and

is filling a much needed and long-felt want in providing education for the children of European residents, with the result that parents are able to keep in the Colony children they would otherwise be obliged to send for education to England, together with the mothers in the many cases in which there are no relatives there to take charge of the children during holidays. It is unnecessary to point out the hardship which the consequent expense and separation impose upon fathers.

2.

The question referred to in the correspond- -ence under reference has again been raised infomally. It will not be pursued at present as it is recognised that to do so to the point of forcing Chinese children into the school would result in emptying the latter of European children. But the question is certain to recur and I would urge most strongly that while it is not acute the opportunity be taken to set the

matter
